All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was.
Toni Morrison, “The Site of Memory”
If asked, many of us would say that the two most critical days of our life are the day we are born and the day we die. A popular aphorism puts it differently: “The two most important days in life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”
The “why day”
For me, the “why day” came in 2009 when I was sixty and published my first short story in Gray’s Sporting Journal. It was titled “Quail Whisperer.” That changed my life. I became a full-time author, sniffing the air for the scent of a good story, like a good hunting dog running nose-down searching for quail.
It is not too early or too late for you to write, sing, paint, cook, chisel, play, or do anything good under the sun that you have, until now, put off for another time. Doing what you were created to do takes you upstream (oppstrøms) where you belong.
- Upstream is harder in the beginning and easier in the end.
- Downstream is easier in the beginning and harder at the end.
Make today your “why day.”
